Tom’s Diner

One of the finest, most insidious earworms in alt/indie history, “Tom’s Diner” originated as a capella folk, but gained its greatest fame via a beat-laden remix by UK act DNA. This new, loungy version largely recreates DNA’s arrangements with a live band: creeping strings, submerged funk bass—but, crucially, no beats—with Vega’s indelible “doot doot doo” hooks (and coffee shop narration) recorded in such an uncomfortably close-up whisper that you can feel the breaths in between.
