When David Bowie and Iggy Pop originally recorded “China Girl,” it was for a record (The Idiot) that helped usher in the death of disco in the post-punk era. Redesigned as a pop-rocker here, Bowie smooths out the rougher sonic edges on one-hand while amping up the dark, imperialist commentary on the other. The song’s bridge, which features hot-button lyrics, is still a shocker.
