Sweet Jane

Though Lou Reed is known for chronicling the darker side of life, here he sides with a normal domestic couple who are just trying to get by in the world. Like the same album’s “Rock and Roll,” “Sweet Jane” took years to build a following; first VU mega-fan David Bowie had Mott the Hoople record it in ’72 and then Reed’s power-chord concert version took off in ’74, before The Cowboy Junkies reignited interest in the tune with their languorous 1988 cover. Great songs live forever.
