Though the legacy of gangsta rap pioneers N.W.A. was just beginning to take shape in 1987, their sound and swagger was almost fully formed. This was most evident on “Boyz-n-the-Hood,” erstwhile frontman Eazy-E’s debut single and the breakout hit from their N.W.A. and the Posse compilation. On it, Eazy offers a brash panorama of Compton delinquency—from malt liquor swigs to fistfights with cops—all bolstered by Dr. Dre’s drum machine thump.
