One of the darkest rockers on The Stranglers’ 1977 debut, the landmark Rattus Norvegicus, “Hanging Around” is at once a romantic and ominous portrait of the lonely, late-night denizens the group encountered while working London’s gritty pub circuit. Over a foreboding organ and guttural stutter that suggests The Doors reborn as Brit punks, singer Hugh Cornwell gnashes his teeth over the “big girl in the red dress” and burly hustlers, all of whom waste their lives just hanging around.
